OCR: t has been suspected that chemicals given off by the creosote bushes might act as poisons in the soil, keeping seedlings from growing near large, well established bushes. Biologists have made extracts of the chemicals in creosote leaves and twigs and have watered seeds and seedlings of the creosote bushes with this 'poisonous' extract. The seeds in these experiments sprouted normally and the seedlings grew well, suggesting that chemicals are not involved in the inhibition process.
