Biologists have made extracts of the chemicals in creosote leaves and twigs and have watered seeds and seedlings of the creosote bushes with this 'poisonous' extract. The seeds in these experiments sprouted normally and the seedlings grew well, suggesting that chemicals are not involved in the inhibition process.
